Interim Minister's Role in Search Process FAQ

Q: Why can't we just hire one of the interim ministers we've had as our new, full time settled minister?
A: Our church and the interim ministers signed contracts that they will be working at our church as interim ministers. They cannot be candidates for the open settled minister position. One of an interim's important roles is to look at our church and the way we do things with new, independent eyes. We need the honest, unsugar-coated feedback that interims give our church.

Q: Why do we need two different interim ministers?
A: Our church has only gone through the search process twice in most of our members' lifetimes. We liked the ministers we had, and got used to their style, their strengths and their weaknesses. But there are no “right” or “wrong” ways to do ministry. And there are many capable UU ministers out there. No one approaches the ministry the same way. After having experinced the interim ministeries of Rev. Roberta Haskin and Rev. Doctor Stephen Furrer, we'll be better able to evaluate which strengths, skills, and styles would make a good match for the next settled minister.
