Faith In Action

Many UUs want to improve the world by working for peace and social justice and/or helping those less fortunate than ourselves. Our Faith in Action Commission (FIA) enables church members and friends to do that in a variety of ways. Currently there are five active groups under the FIA umbrella.

The Peace & Social Justice Committee is involved in education and action against the US wars in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and spearheaded the passage of a resolution at our congregational meeting in May 2010 calling for immediate cessation of US combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and prompt withdrawal of all US troops from those countries.

The Multi-Racial Development Committee seeks to make our congregation more diverse and encourages and acts upon anti-racist efforts in our local and global community. For example, MRDC marched in Phoenix against Arizona’s anti-immigrant legislation, SB 1070.

The Hunger Task Force helps prepare and serve meals and provide other necessities to homeless people and mentally ill people at three agencies in Santa Monica: Step Up on 2nd; Turning Point Transitional Housing, and Daybreak.

Interweave is the Unitarian Universalist affiliate group for gays, bisexuals, lesbians and transgenders and their friends and allies. Its issues for study and action this year continue to be marriage equality and outreach to at-risk GBLT youth.

The Green Living Committee is dedicated to educating our fellow members and greater community about how to help our Earth be healthier by living greener and healthier lives.

To be placed on the mailing list of any of these committees, please send an email to FIA@uusm.org and specify which committee(s).
