UUSM - Religious Education - Coming of Age
Coming of Age
8th Grade, Ages 12-13
In partnership with parents, youth and the Religious Education Council, the
DRE and the Youth Activities Committee have created a year-long program that
celebrates and challenges youth who are "coming of age."
Like youth in Jewish, Christian or other traditions around the world, UU youth
need a ritual process to mark the transition from childhood to maturing young
person. Our version, similar to that used in churches across the country, begins
with self-exploration and group-bonding activities, then progresses with study
of UU history and identity, a church service project, and a mentoring relationship
with an adult church member. The year culminates when the group presents their
religious “credos” before the entire congregation in a worship service of their
own design. This ambitious program depends for its success on full participation
from youth, their parents, their mentors, and some special adult advisors. In
addition, our Youth Activities Committee provides support and additional teen
activities for them to participate in with the YRUU group.
If you’d like to become involved with this program, please contact the YAC
chair, Karen Patch.
