UUSM - Religious Exploration - RE Council

R.E. Council & Committees

The RE Council of UUCCSM meets monthly, working in partnership with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) to plan and implement our religious exploration program. Their responsibilities include recruiting and training volunteers; curriculum evaluation and selection; establishing program goals, policies and procedures; providing RE events and activities for our young people, their families, and our whole religious community; and advocating for RE within the larger congregation.

Meeting schedule TBD; contact DRE for location and times. All meetings are open; visitors are welcome.

RE Committees:

Worship – Works with DRE to plan and carry out monthly Worship Sundays for Way Cool participants, building community through engaging children in celebrating “being you and being UU.”
Classroom Support– Provides support throughout the year for classroom teachers, organizes periodic meetings & social gatherings for teachers, and works with DRE to facilitate ongoing communication between teachers, Council, and other RE committees.
Social Justice – Coordinates volunteers for Social Justice Month for Way Cool participants, providing opportunities for putting our UU principles into action.
Arts -- Coordinates volunteers for Arts Month for Way Cool participants in May, providing opportunities to explore our principles through the arts.
Events – Coordinates special RE program events during the year, such as the UNICEF Carnival, Cookie Bake, Mystery Pals, Volunteer Picnic, etc.
Youth Activities – Plans monthly social events for Coming of Age & YRUU youth (8th-12th grades.) Works in conjunction with the DRE to oversee the church’s ministry to youth (Jr. & Sr. high), in both the “big picture” policies and specific programming.

All Committees are volunteer-staffed and welcome new members and new ideas! Interested in learning more about them? Check the boxes on the registration forms, or contact Catherine Farmer with questions.

Our Mission

Imagine that the RE Council is the embodiment of the UU principle, "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence." By branching off and concentrating on specific tasks within the RE program, we are able, through trust, interdependence, and cooperation, to expand and explore the many possibilities for our children’s religious education. It is the mission of this RE Council to meet the goals of the individual sub-groups while developing an overall program that provides inspiration to all of our children in every age group.

Each sub-group has its own individual goal within the scope of the entire program. The Social Justice Action Group is concentrating on building awareness of our relationship with our community and with our planet. Global responsibility can be an overwhelming concept for anyone, so it is their mission to approach this from a place of empowerment by showing that you can make a difference. The Worship Arts sub-group provides all the benefits we adults currently enjoy through participating in spiritual ritual. Chalice lighting, Joys and Sorrows, readings, and a host of other age-appropriate rituals will tap into the experience of church, allowing them to "practice what it means to be human." The Curriculum sub-group sees itself as the skeleton, an armature from which the rest of the program can build. Additionally, it is our mission to address the needs of our older children by continuing OWL and also providing Coming of Age and YRUU, our high school youth group. Events, which have in the past required so much time and man power, will be one aspect of the RE experience, providing needed social interaction and building bonds through play.

As a team, we can provide a broader experience, and therefore a wider springboard from which our children can form their own ideas about spirituality.

Religious Education Council Covenant

We come together to create and model universal compassionate values of love, justice, service and peace for our children and youth.

We covenant together to pursue our common goals and address our concerns in an atmosphere of openness, sharing and respect.

As a community, we will listen to each other, support one another and enjoy each other while cooperatively working and playing.
