Who We Are

The Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica is a vibrant home for liberal religion on the Westside of Los Angeles. Each week, about 200 adults and children attend our Sunday worship services, including music and religious education programming, at 9am and 11am. Our congregation strives to be an agent of
transformation, central in individual people's lives and in the community at large. We desire to reflect our larger community and its diversity and to be a place where people feel welcome, well connected, valued, and loved.
 
Music is vital to the ministry of this congregation. Sunday worship services include congregational singing of hymns, meditations, rounds, and/or sung refrains. Each service also includes music on piano and organ, silence and sometimes additional instruments. Most services include singing by a volunteer adult choir. Occasional
services include children’s choirs, intergenerational family choirs, visiting choirs from local congregations, and guest musicians.

Who We Seek

We seek an experienced and highly skilled Director of Music with the ability to skillfully conduct the choir and lead congregational singing. The successful candidate will have a compelling leadership style, excellent communication skills, great conducting technique, a working knowledge of vocal technique, basic keyboard skills, and a stylistically diverse repertoire of choral literature.

Time Commitment:
Year Round with paid vacation commensurate with time worked Thursday Rehearsals - 7.30pm until 9.15pm (September-June) Sunday Services - September-June: 8am call/9am and 11am services; July and August: 9am call/10am services There is an annual Choir Retreat, multiple Christmas Eve Services, a Fall and Spring Concert, and other musical fundraisers and presentations as appropriate.

Job Summary
The Director of Music reports to and works closely with the Minister. They will oversee and support the work of the Music Committee, direct the Choir, supervise Section Leaders and the Church Accompanist and work collaboratively with the Worship Associates Team and Staff Team.

The Director of Music directs the adult choir, including weekly choir rehearsal, selection of thematically appropriate music, and performance. The Director of Music leads the congregation in singing and arranges for vocal and/or instrumental music for the Sunday morning services. The Director of Music works with the Music Committee to
plan musical events at the church and supports the participation of children and youth in the musical life of the church.
 
This is a 1/3 time position non-exempt hourly position, usually ranging between 13-15 hours per week.

Responsibilities and Duties
● Attend weekly planning meetings with the Minister.
● Direct the choir at weekly rehearsal, Sunday morning services, and special performances.
● Select and procure appropriate choral music and coordinate with the Minister on selection of music for the Sunday morning services and other performances.
● Supervise, direct and evaluate all personnel reporting to the Music Director including Church Accompanist and paid Choir Section Leaders.
● Plan and direct music for Christmas Eve services and other special annual events.
● Maintain the music library and/or recruit volunteers to do so.
● Develop and manage budgets for the music program.
● Oversee professional substitutions for scheduled absence of all paid musical personnel.
● Member in good standing of the UU Musician’s Network and comply with the Code of Professional Practices.

Minimum Qualifications:
● Experience leading a church music program.
● Experience as a choral director and familiarity with traditional and contemporary choral repertoire.
● Skillful leadership of congregational singing in a variety of styles.
● Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
● Ability to inspire, motivate, support, and manage volunteers and music staff.
● 5+ years of experience as a professional church musician.
● Respect for Unitarian Universalist values and principles.
● Bachelors Degree in Music
● Excellent Sight Reading Skills
● Basic proficiency on piano and organ

Job Type: Part-time, 13-15 hours per week
