The Peace & Social Justice Committee (PSJ) puts our UU principles of justice, human rights and sustainability into action in our local community and beyond. Our ongoing work is to organize activities, programs, and support for support external campaigns in the areas of labor and economic issues, anti-racism, police reform, mass incarceration, immigration and detention, LGBTQIA+ rights, reproductive justice, and resisting war. We work with community partners such as CLUE (Clergy & Laity United for Economic Justice), Black Lives Matter: Los Angeles, OFA (Organizing for Action), ACLU, the Sunrise Movement and others. We also collaborate with the UUSM Green Committee on issues relating to environmental justice and the climate crisis. During the pandemic we are keeping the work going remotely.

This month's topic:

This Sunday: Reproductive Rights are under attack! How will we support the work to resist the fundamentalist agenda in Texas and elsewhere and affirm the bodily autonomy of all people?

Everyone is invited to join us!

For more information, contact: justice@uusm.org and follow UU Santa Monica Peace & Justice Team on Facebook.

Science Non-Fiction Book Group: Tuesday September 21, 7:30 pm, via Zoom. To receive the link, you will want to be on the group email list. Contact: Rebecca Crawford, sci-nonfiction@uusm.org

We will discuss “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents,” by Isabel Wilkerson. The recent release of 2020 census data makes it clear that we are becoming more diverse as a society. By understanding the roots and pillars of caste, we may better see our common humanity. It is more important than ever. All are welcome.

Contact Rebecca Crawford at sci-nonfiction@uusm.org for more information.

Open Meditation Wellsprings: Wednesdays and Fridays - Online

These are drop-in groups. You are welcome to join us when it feels right to you.  If you come in late or need to leave early, just do so quietly. These are exceptional times, and we trust each person to use the group in the way that fits their need.

We listen to brief readings, sit together quietly for twenty minutes, journal and share with each other what's on our hearts. This time of quiet meditation and sharing can help sustain and ground us during these difficult days - supporting us to pause and rest in our embodied experience, as it is. We simply sit together in our shared humanity. We call off the struggle to become other than we are.

NEW:  We meet every Wednesday and Friday afternoon from 12:00 to 1:00 pm.

Taking this time for quiet meditation and sharing in the intimacy of having sat in silence together can help sustain and ground us during these difficult days.

Please email Meditation@UUSM.org for the zoom link and directions for using zoom.

Freethinker Forum is a monthly interactive meeting sponsored by AAHS: Agnostics, Atheists, Humanists & Secularists of UU Santa Monica. All are welcome to join in a lively discussion where a diversity of viewpoints are
encouraged and respected.

Please email aahs@uusm.org for Zoom link.

AAHS Freethinker Forum Sunday May 23rd - Revisiting EMERGENCE, Complexity, and Creativity. The cross-disciplinary science of Emergence (emergent properties and complexity) attempts to describe how complex patterns of organization and evolution arise from simpler components -- such as galaxies, snowflakes, and life itself. Emergence gives rise to chemistry from physics, psychology from biology, and consciousness from organic matter. A wondrous but partly mysterious feature of our universe, some scientists and theologians alike think Emergence is the key to reconciling science and religion.

AAHS (Atheists, Agnostics, Humanists & Secularists/Skeptics) is a group that meets monthly (4th Sundays) for discussion and fellowship at the Unitarian Universalist Community Church of Santa Monica. All are welcome!

The term Humanism (sometimes known as secular humanism, modern humanism or scientific humanism) was first used as a moniker for a non-theistic, compassionate philosophy or worldview by Rev. John Dietrich of the First Unitarian Society of Minneapolis in 1916, over 100 years ago! The early Unitarian Humanists wrote the original "Humanism and its Aspirations" manifesto and co-founded the American Humanist Association, helping to begin an international movement.

"The time has come for widespread recognition of the radical changes in religious beliefs throughout the modern world. The time is past for mere revision of traditional attitudes. Science and economic change have disrupted the old beliefs. Religions the world over are under the necessity of coming to terms with new conditions created by a vastly increased knowledge and experience. In every field of human activity, the vital movement is now in the direction of a candid and explicit humanism."
Humanist Manifesto 1, 1933
